The Michelson-morley experiment and the quest for the absolute frame

Author(s):

Mrityunjay Kumar

Abstract:

The michelson model experiment which was performed in 1887 is still considered a pivotal point in history of physics. The primary objective of this experiment was to detect the movement of matter through the ether which was presumed to be the medium of light at the time. But to everyone's surprise the experiment did not find any evidence. It was then prove that the speed of light remains constant irrespective of how fast someone moves in space. In light of this unforseen result scientists discarded the concept of ether. The fact that this theory provided the basis of Einstein's special relativity can't be negative thus this changed the way we perceive space, time and motion. This article further provides the abstract of the experiments history, its setup and it significance for modern physics.
